A Navy blimp crashed in the coastal hills west of Hollister shortly after midnight. All nine crew members escaped before the ship disappeared. One man suffered a head injury and another a broken leg, with several others hurt but none killed. Sheriff’s deputies and search parties fanned out about 85 miles south of San Francisco seeking the missing airship and its crew while noting similarities to a prior unexplained patrol blimp incident.
Desperate inmates in a jailbreak at Alcatraz federal prison left two men dead and two captured. Warde James A.
