British forces, urged by Haig, maintain the Flanders front with Allied resistance slowing Hindenburg. German progress near Amiens checked by French and British. Heavy action halts Hun advance near Meuville Paris under fire.
Reports from London and Paris describe heavy fighting along the Somme vicinity near Amiens with Allied reinforcements arriving. German forces launch counterattacks amid bombardment as British and French troops press to hold key positions including Vimy Ridge and Bethune. Casualties and damage are reported in several cities including Paris and Amiens as efforts to slow the German push continue.
A funeral plan for Sergeant Glenn Paulson Corry is announced in Corry with a private service at the home of his parents on Liberty Street followed by a church service and public rites. Local leaders including Mayor C. L. Alexander and the Chamber of Commerce organize a memorial ensuring national mourning and a public tribute.
A fire at the state asylum near the city destroyed three frame buildings. W. Griffin, president, reports most inmates died or were killed while attempting to escape. Fifty inmates were rescued by attendants as staff raced to safety, with many residents described as physically weak and unable to defend themselves. The blaze left the main area in ruins and the cause remains undetermined.
Funk Messenger a former resident here died this morning at 7 40 in the Newark New Jersey hospital after a three week illness. He is survived by his wife and several siblings. The body will be sent to his home for funeral arrangements with services at 8 00 pm at Saint Paul Lutheran Church. Burial in Pins Grave Cemetery.
Major C. B. Campbell divisional officer of the Salvation Army arrives from Philadelphia and conducts a series of services. He speaks at the First Baptist Church Sunday morning and leads a full schedule at the Army Hall including Sunday School Rally, song meeting, open air, youth meeting and Salvation meeting through the evening.
Quinton N Howard noted orator will speak at the Pint M B Church Monday evening on war. His address is expected to interowt a broad audience. Also in Jamestown Mrs J J Desmond and others were seen at a morning and afternoon event.
Funeral services for Rev G E Wand Ward of the First Presbyterian Church will be held with Dr Poutke of the First Methodist Church assisting. Internment at Pine Grove Cemetery follows. Members of Company A and former comrades of Sergeant Paulson will be bearers. City officials and Red Cross groups will participate in the funeral procession. Proclamation calls for honors in the 2 to 8 pm period. Former National Guard members with full armor are urged to report to Lt W Lloyd Marsh tonight if possible.
The Corry Rod and Gun Club met at the United Commercial Travelers rooms to review reports and assign new committees for an intake organization. Prize lists published in the Journal include trout fishing events with various gear prizes and entries. a note on hunting and fishing licenses and residency rules for New York state residents is included, with license requirements and proposed legislative measures.
The Standard Turnbuckle Company baseball team holds its first meeting tomorrow at 2 30 PM. Fred Weaver is president, Wallace Cogswell manager, G Mountain captain, William Soir secretary treasurer. Practice starts at 3 PM if weather allows. games planned at Washington wrest grounds near the chat factory.
Members of the Corey Motor Club convened with officers L. Wo Ohne presiding, including President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Desmond was slated as delegate to the national convention, and W. Ea, Marah to represent the club at the State Federation meeting. They discussed fundraising for Wayne county road improvements and traffic safety measures for small motorcycles and drivers. An outing is planned for the coming season with a special day arranged for members to tour nearby courses.
Federal food administrator for Erie County announces orders for bakers to use 48 percent substitute in all bread and pastry products starting April 14 1918. Pies cakes and sweet goods must contain tithe percent substitute to support soldiers and wheat conservation. Violators will be prosecuted.
New Iberia La April 12 Robert F Broussard Jr United States Senator from Louisiana died at his home after several weeks illness from complications. His death requires Louisiana to elect two senators in the November general election to fill different terms with Broussard’s seat expiring March 4 1921 and Senator Taubell’s term ending March 4 next year.
Deputy and Administrator Paka issues explanation about canned corn and corn flakes not to be substitutes when purchasing wheat. The Wood Administration states no canned goods and rents Thydewhern 9 substitute. Weather forecast notes generally poor conditions.
