Illinois Voters Look to First Primary of 1954
The first political duel of 1954 in Illinois centers on a Republican bid to unseat Senator Paul H. Douglas as nine GOP hopefuls clash for the nomination. Joseph T. Meek and Edward A. Hayes are top contenders with Meek favored by observers. The ballot may also determine reelection chances for several House members, though local issues dominate. The Supreme Court term ends without a ruling on school desegregation, with a decision expected April 26.
