Six members of the Corry FFA received awards totaling 25 dollars from Robert Clark, assistant cashier, on behalf of the National Bank of Corry. In New York City a teacher strike disrupted classes across the city and sparked a riot at Seward Park High School on the Lower East Side. About 2,300 pupils gathered in the auditorium then hurled papers from windows as officers and teachers struggled to control the chaos. Police redirected traffic and reinforced, citing a television crew for possibly inciting the display.
The Corry Pennsylvania State Employment Service runs a skill and aptitude testing program for high school seniors in Corry Union City and Spartansburg. Forty seniors at Corry Area High School are tested today second day with sixteen in Spartansburg and twenty five in Union City. Test administrator Mrs Clay Cummings assisted by a proctor from the Erie office leads the effort which aims to identify skills for students unlikely to attend college or enlist in the armed services. William Michael PSES manager notes employers increasingly seek tested applicants and a counselor from the Erie PSES will provide one on one discussion of results and career guidance after all tests are finished.
Firefighters were summoned twice yesterday. The first call to Stewart road involved a chimney fire at Frank Sanders home causing about 650 dollars in damage. Twelve volunteers with Engine 3 and Emergency Truck 5, plus a Columbus tanker, fought the blaze until water supply issues halted the run. A second call near Random road involved boys’ campfire getting out of hand. 12 volunteers and Engine 2 with Emergency Truck 5 extinguished the blaze in about 20 minutes.
Corry area Future Farmers of America members received nearly 20 awards at the annual awards presentation held at Corry Area High School. Dekalb Award went to Allan Adams for agricultural achievements. dairy trophies to Howard Miller and Richard Trisket. Harold Mallory of Columbus Milling presented the honors. FFA Foundation medals were awarded to Worth Hanuohd, George Sekerak, Edward Krass, Art Carlson, Gerald Krass, and Ronald Walters for farm mechanics, livestock farming, poultry farming, public speaking, greenhouse management, and more. Forrest Hopkins, publisher of the North East Breeze, spoke on India and the Far East with color slides. Richard Farrer, the local agriculture instructor, said Charles Thompson of Penn State presented the medals.
