A teenage boy died after being pitched from a roller coaster car at Jantzen Beach Amusement Park in Portland. Gary Seckins, 16, of Orchards Washington, was in a front seat when he fell head first and the car rolled over him about 60 feet above the ground on an elevated track. Deputy Jim Purcell stated the car began a downward ride and he pled onto the track.
Washington AP reports NASA will conduct short test hops for seven Mercury astronauts, launching from Cape Canaveral 20 to 25 miles up on Redstone rockets and landing about 100 miles away near the Bahamas. One man will be chosen for an orbital flight in 1961, circling Earth every nine minutes at about 18,000 mph. The seven, all veteran military pilots and in their 30s, are married and want to be first.
In Pittsburgh witnesses for defense contend Jerry Pacek 14 was at Brackenridge home with Mary Daley 20 between 7 and 11 p.m. on the night a 56 year old woman was killed. Mrs Ethel Daley, Mrs Lillian Stevick and siblings Helen and Mary Daley testified Pacek was visiting Mary Daley during that period. Pacek’s parents also testified.
The Soviet Union through Tass denied reports of arming Kurdish volunteers for Iraq. Tass stated the Kurds aboard the Grazia were peaceful citizens seeking repatriation, describing the operation as humane with 459 men and 34 women and children aboard.
In Los Angeles labor expert Arthur Carstens of UCLA urges a five to seven year cycle of sabbaticals for workers. One year off in leisure or study with half wages paid by the state and half by the employer, aimed at ongoing education and shifting careers. The plan envisions retaining older workers and encouraging earlier entry into the labor market. Major hospitalization report from Miami notes aviation authority Major Alexander de Seversky, 64, hospitalized after heart issues following a Bahamas trip during which he caught a 150 pound shark.

A 17 year old Union City youth was fined 35 dollars and costs at a hearing on drunken and disorderly conduct before Alderman M S Cobbett this morning. Keith Ray Hawley was arrested at 10 30 last night by city police who received a complaint of disturbance at the Knights of Columbus rooms on South Center Street. Police said Hawley admitted buying a case of beer in Cutting New York and since he is underage to buy liquor in New York state the case will be turned over to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.

A Boston widow and her emaciated 33 year old daughter were found by a priest and police in a cluttered apartment where the daughter had been held prisoner for about a year. The mother reportedly died by suicide. The daughter, weighing under 85 pounds, was removed to hospital for care.

A three year old boy was killed on a farm near Union City when a truck operated by his aunt moved into the hay yard. The body was taken to Glenn Funeral Home with no official cause of death released yet by Coroner Warren W. Wood. Surviving are the father mother maternal grandparents and siblings. Mineral and funeral arrangements have been completed.
Harrisburg AP report: smoke from an exploding oil heater filled a second floor apartment killing 10 month old Lucretia M. Stewart and seriously injuring her sisters Gwendolyn 2 and Caroline Ann 17 months. Fire officials said the blaze confined to the upper floor unit occupied by Henry Bennett.
