Japanese Bowlers Push Up Maple Prices for U.S. Furniture makers
The bowling boom in Japan drives demand for maple, beech and birch hardwoods in the United States. Exports of maple rise sharply from 27 000 to 2 723 000 board feet between 1969 and 1971, pushing maple prices up two and a half times in six to eight months. Jamestown area suppliers cut maple prematurely to cash in, and shortages spread nationwide. Industry groups plan talks with the Commerce Department in Washington to press for a relief solution and prevent curtailment of production or switch to other woods.
