Selmons go high as Bucs nab No 1 pick in draft
New era opened with Leroy Selmon chosen No 1 by the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 6 foot 2, 260 pound Oklahoma defensive tackle hailed the pick as a career highlight. Dewey Selmon joined him as Tampa Bay’s third round selection, creating the fifth brothers duo to be drafted together. The draft also saw a run on running backs led by Chuck Muncie Joe Washington and Mike Pruitt, with Archie Griffin later selected by Cincinnati. In other notes Seattle traded for Notre Dame tackle Steve Niehaus then grabbed Muncie later, while the Jets pursued Joe Namath’s successor.
