U S Did Not Request Pan Am Games In Cleveland
Washington state officials say Ohio Auditor James Rhodes invited Latin American nations to hold the 1959 Pan American Games in Cleveland. The State Department contends it learned of the plan only after Rhodes extended invitations, and it never supported using federal funds for the event. The testimony before a House subcommittee explained the decision helped end Cleveland’s bid. Guatemala offered to host the next games.
