Philadelphia Fires Stop Penn Central Service Halt Across City
A Philadelphia warehouse fire forced Penn Central to cut power and halt New York to Washington train service for over four hours. Seven major fires occurred citywide, including a 100 foot high blaze at the abandoned H R Allen Flexible Flyer Sled Co building near North Philadelphia station, prompting evacuations of about 50 families and extensive fire department response. Fire Commissioner Joseph Rizzo noted the unprecedented day with 28 alarms and seven multi alarm blazes, while officials suspected no relation among fires.
