Supreme Court ruling limits states on sedition laws
The United States Supreme Court ruled Congress to have exclusive power over sedition, invalidating state statutes. Chief Justice Earl Warren led the majority 6 to 3, reversing a Pennsylvania ruling and upholding federal authority in cases of subversion. The decision centers on Steve Nelson, Western Pennsylvania Communist leader, and affirms federal defenses against totalitarian aggression. Tokyo editor Teuniga Baba, 80, longtime advocate for free press, also dies.
