The Senate passed a bill to admit more European refugees and extend the present program to June 30 1951. The measure raises the admissions cap from 205000 to 389000 and removes 40 percent and 3 percent regional limits, with changes to eligibility and duration debated amid partisan lines.
Snow covered western Pennsylvania with white mantels across the ground during the early morning hours before easing. Temperatures dropped to near 21 degrees overnight and rose above freezing by morning. eastern areas reached as high as 36 degrees. City precipitation totals up to 0.64 inches with the prior day rainfall.
Corry public schools reported March stamp and bond sales totaling 409. The tally shows seven schools with varied amounts led by Turner High and Elementary and Senior High campuses.
A fire at a Toronto home killed six children while parents Mr and Mrs Hoy Hardigg managed to escape with three year old Howard and another child. Neighbors reported the blaze spread rapidly and the children perished in their beds as the house went up like a torch in the early hours.
Fred Walter Lennon 39 a famed criminal was killed in a desert chase near Mojave California by FBI agent Jerome J. Dount and Highway Patrolman Sam H. McDaniel. They cornered Lennon after a 70 mph pursuit and opened fire as he resisted, seven bullets striking him. The pursuit and arrest attempt aimed at Lennon a partner Lee Emory Downs 44 and Downs' wife Patricia. Hoover lauded McDaniel for duty under pressure.
A Bryn Mawr College student reported missing was located in Miami Beach Florida. Gertrude Nauman alerted her Harrisburg relatives and left for Florida with the girl’s uncle Conway Olmstead of Chicago. The mother said the girl has nervous trouble and had been living in a Miami Beach hotel.
John Foster Dulles a New York lawyer and foreign policy expert was named to serve as consultant to Secretary of State Acheson. The appointment signals bipartisan support and positions Dulles among top aides with broad responsibility across Europe the Far East and UN matters.
The mine welfare fund trustees cleared a path to restart pension payments for coal miners, with over 25 million dollars moved to new trustees including Josephine Roche and Charles Owen. Two Kansas City police sergeants, Charles Binnesio and Charles Gargatta, were killed in a dawn shooting at a political club in Northside. Detectives say robbery motive appears. hundreds of dollars in cash and valuables were found on the victims. Police Chief Henry W. Dotson noted the killers may be locals, and federal authorities will join the probe due to subpoenas in a Federal grand jury investigation.
AFL President William Green and Philip Murray of the CIO push for cohesion among major unions including the AFL, CIO, United Mine Workers, Machinists, and Railroad Brotherhoods to form a single 16 million member federation. A Corry chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business is forming. District manager John Mullen says 42 local independent merchants have joined as the setup continues over the next two to three weeks. The group mails monthly ballots on small business issues to members for forwarding to the local congressman. The federation, founded in 1993, already lists 9 040 district chairmen and expects about 75 members in Corry.
