Erle April and George W Ailen along with Thomas Martiny arrived from St Catherine Ontario after honorable discharge from the South Canadian Infantry. They stood before Captain W Morrison of the local Naval Militia to file applications for enlistment in the National Naval Volunteers, citing Americanism and the call of duty.
United Press reports that after Congress declared war, crews of interned German ships in American ports were removed to control of the U S government. Ships including the German liner Kronprinzessin Cecilie and others were seized or damaged, with plans to repair and return vessels to service.
The Corry Hihle Furniture Company presents a week of progress at its West Boat Street plant adding a one story wing measuring thirty by nine feet adjoining the main factory. The expansion supports thirty five to forty workers and completes the plant, with shipments underway and operations in full swing. A local basketball game at the Presbyterian gym saw the Bedé beat the White teams of the Starlettes 17 to 2 in a well attended contest despite cold weather.
Gas rate changes announced for May will affect Warren and surrounding towns served by Pennsylvania Gas Company. A hearing planned for April 18 on a complaint by a resident was postponed to May with a statewide Public Utilities Commission session likely in Harrisburg. The probe will review service quality and overall gas conditions, plus the status of gas rates in the region.
