Pirates to retire Clemente number before opener against Cardinals
The Pittsburgh Pirates will retire Roberto Clemente’s jersey number 21 before Friday’s opener with the St. Louis Cardinals. Clemente died in a plane crash last December, and his widow Vera and sons Roberto Jr Luis and Enrique will take part in the pregame ceremony, with Vera receiving the Golden Glove Award. The Pirates, wearing patches bearing 21, aim to improve after a 1 2 15 spring, while the Cardinals add rookies Ray Busse and Ken Reitz to their lineup.
