Highway 9 assault at Khe Sanh continues heavy fighting
Amid the five day operation to open Highway 9 the heaviest clashes occurred near Khe Sanh. U S forces report 24 Marines killed or wounded and 180 North Vietnamese killed in total. Commanders consider possible Marine withdrawal to 1 000 troops or replacement by South Vietnamese or U S Army units as siege forces around the base remain. North Vietnamese strength around Khe Sanh estimated around 7 000 to 14 000 in round figures, with higher past estimates. Meanwhile Operation Wilderness 62 miles north of Saigon, launched March 11, marks a new ground sweep by the 25th Infantry Division and the 199th Light Infantry Brigade.
