Labor writer attacked with acid on New York street

Labor columnist Victor Riese was splashed in the face with acid by an unidentified assailant near Midtown after broadcasting critical remarks about a Long Island labor union. His assistant, Betty Nevins of Englewood New Jersey, said the comments may have provoked the attack. Doctors feared eye injuries. Riese said the attack related to his labor racketeering broadcast and referenced Long Island Local 198 and other union leaders. Police found a bottle at the scene and sent it to the lab. Nevins’s stockings were splashed. she was unharmed.

Ten Thousand Dollar Loss In Elgin Road Fire

The Frontera family of Elgin road 1.5 miles west of Elgin faced a total loss by fire that destroyed their home at 4 45 this morning. Estimated loss around 10000 with unclear insurance coverage. Neighbors reported the home empty besides the Frontera children and John Frontera staying in Union City earlier. The blaze was first seen by Theodore Punch at 4 15 AM and Union City Fire Department arrived too late to save the building, which was a solid mass of flames. This follows a prior barn fire on the property. Frontera, a self employed builder, had remodeled the home recently and built several houses in the Corry area.

Veteran State Policeman McCann Dies at 56

LATROBE PA February Mister Captain Joseph G. McCann 56 Latrobe veteran of the Pennsylvania State Police died last night at Latrobe Hospital. He served 12 years with the State Police and the former State Highway Patrol. He collapsed while on duty at troop headquarters in Creontburg. He was assistant commander of squadron one. McCann was a veteran of World War I.
