The talk highlighted the organization’s international scope and work abroad. Cliff Howard was named to coordinate a local delegate for the district rally on April 9. A. H. Stokes of Hamburg, N.Y. attended as a guest. John A. Blatt and his family were honored with cigars by members in celebration of his newborn son.
In Chicago on April 4 a federal court duty awarded Helen Redford Jones, ex-wife of author Henry Radford-Jones, $100,900 in alleged alienation of affection against the writer and his present wife Mary Bernardin Praford Jones. The former sought $200,000 in damages.
In Gallup New Mexico on April 4 two men were killed and five wounded when a riot erupted during an eviction hearing. Sheriff R Carmichael and Ignacio Velarde died in the clash as about 100 unemployed men tried to force entry to the courtroom chaired by justice W M Bickel. Deputies were struck by gunfire and three unemployed men were shot, one fatally.
Twenty six Corry men including all police department members have completed first aid courses under the Corty chapter of the American Red Cross. Certificates will be presented at the Municipal building Friday at 7 45 pm. Dr N Troy Gillette will address the meeting on first aid. Instructors were Francis Duke B A Williams and J P Bliss. Public invited to attend.
Anthony Eden completed his eastern Europe tour with a two hour visit to Foreign Minister J. Benes in Prague. The talks formed the final chapter of his report to Britain and allied governments on Czechoslovakia Russia and Poland. He arrived from Warsaw at 7:21 p m EST and departed for London by plane at 7:20 a m EST.
Applications for enrollment in Citizenship Military Training Camps are now available from high school principals in Corry and Union City and from Lieut. Joan Richardson of Columbus. The camp runs July 1 to August 5. Corry’s quota is five. Union City can send an unspecified number. Eligible applicants are able bodied students over 17 of good character. Lieut. Richardson will provide information and distribute applications in the district.
Edward J Reilly former chief counsel for Bruno Hauptmann announced new evidence to dispute Hauptmann's guilt in the Lindbergh kidnapping. He cited sightings of four men near Hopewell days before the crime and a Brooklyn car theft, saying the four men did not fit Hauptmann's description. Reilly suggested using the facts in a new trial appeal alongside Hochmuth evidence.
Lindsay Lidisay, 24, on trial at Little Valley New York for the murder of Bernice Farnsworth broke down in court as a double bladed axe alleged to be the murder instrument was produced. The instrument drew tears as District Attorney Krieger questioned and the physician testified the axe could have caused fatal injuries.
Ottawa April 4 Two Rock Island freight trains crashed near the Ottawa station killing two trainmen Richard Wolf 55 engineer of the Northwest Limited freight and William House 50 fireman and injuring two others Brakeman Joseph Conlon may die and Fay Green suffered less serious injuries.
Austria plans to claim the right to expand its army beyond the World War limits, arguing for removal of deputy restrictions. Officials say Hungary Bulgaria and Turkey may follow by demanding treaty relaxations. Austria would seek a force of about 60 000 to 64 000 with 50 000 conscripts while total regulars would be capped at 330 000 under St Germain provisions.
Pittsburgh April 4 Pennsylvania supreme court heard the appeal of antoracit miners from an injunction against the Glen Allen Coat Company Wilkes-Barre restraining the union from picketing and requiring rescission of a strike resolution. Attorney Marianelli of Wilkes-Barre assigned three errors to Judge Valentine. He argued the order violated constitutional rights and that the strike resolution was illegal and improperly compelled.
Anthony Barile of Jamestown walks free after nearly fourteen months in New York prisons awaiting appeals for alleged blackmail of Mrs. James M. Selissa former Bemis Pot resident. The Appellate Division at Rochester reversed the conviction and dismissed the indictment citing insufficient evidence, exonerating Barile.
Houston April 4 The Texas Rangers investigated reports of medieval torture at a prison farm where convicts allegedly mutilated their own bodies to escape guards on the yard. Gov Hart ordered Ranger Capt Fred McDaniel to the scene after a telegram from W A Boyett.
Boyett and three board members reported inmates mutilated themselves to escape alleged brutality by guards. They cited three men whipped March 15 leaving deep scars, four men removing limbs, and complete amputations linked to home cases. Capt Kelly denied torture and said disturbances came from inmate fights.
April 4. Patricia Maguire known as the sleeping beauty who fell asleep in 1022 shows signs of returning animation and consciousness. She is now 29 or 30 per Monday, aged 46 at onset, with doctors noting a rare form of epidemic encephalitis sinepiiyy sickness as a possible cause per Dr Eugene F Trant in JAMA.
District Commander Lloyd Stowe and others from Elmer Garvier Post 26 attended a district American Legion meeting in Erie to plan the visit of national commander Frank N Belgrano Jr on Friday May 20. A mammoth drum and bugle competition is planned for June 26 in the Ene stadium with teams from many states.
April 4 report notes a resolution filing set for April 18. The analytic for introduction of a bill to the lower branch of the legislature was introduced today by Rep. Clinton Ay Bowers of Philadelphia.
The Ladies Auxiliary of the Corry Hospital will sponsor a tag day for the benefit of the Cony hospital on National Hospital Day. At a meeting in the Nurses' home, Mrs. J. A. Cassidy was named chair of the Welfare committee and plans for the sale were discussed. A ward at the hospital will be used to aid the effort.
A large group of Corry residents, many men, gathered at the municipal building to file for old age pensions. Representatives from the Erie pension bureau assisted with filings and answered questions about qualifications. Few locals have yet received pensions as funds and approvals are being allocated.
