Midwest Snow Strikes Upper Midwest With Flood Fears Looming
An April snowstorm dumped six to eleven inches across the upper Midwest while Mississippi Valley residents faced potential flooding surpassing 1973 levels. Winds over 95 mph hampered road work as airports and roads closed from northern Indiana to Michigan. Chicago saw seven weather deaths and 11 inches of snow. Grand Rapids eight inches. Milwaukee five. The Mississippi River crest threatened New Orleans at near record levels, and parts of Southern Illinois were already flooded. The system produced thundershowers and tornadoes in parts of the region, with record lows set in several locales and widespread cold across the plains and beyond.
