Road Building Program Starts As Winter Ends
Harrisburg April 2 spring brings a major Pennsylvania road building plan. About 623 miles of state highways will be constructed or reconstructed this year at an estimated cost exceeding 34 million dollars. The department plans snow removal, equipment purchases, and upkeep for 84 thousand miles of highways and 27 thousand bridges, with total outlays around 11 million. Surface treatments for 600 miles and resurfacing of 426 miles are included. By March 1 contracts had been awarded for 31 miles of highways and bridges. Total state highway spending for the year reaches roughly 77.5 million dollars, with the Motor Fund facing a 33 million shortfall if not supplemented by new revenues. By December 1 the balance should drop to 9.9 million, then tax receipts and license renewals will push year-end cash to about 21.9 million. Monthly allocations for construction and maintenance are tabulated, showing peak instruction and maintenance spending from May through November, while administrative costs remain steadier.

Direct Relief Load Drops as WPA Activity Looms
Corry relief figures show a drop from 88 to 74 cases in a week. Robert Callin, in charge of the royal office of the Department of Public Assistance, cited a total of 230 direct relief cases on the district rolls, a 33 case decrease from last week. One third of the decline occurred locally, with the city dropping from 83 to 74 cases, attributed mainly to fewer relief clients joining World Relief and a shift of assistance to unemployment compensation, reflecting a weaker employment outlook as spring demand fades and industries cut hours.
