Birth Defect Of Heart Corrected In Infant At Hospital

Surgeons at Children's Hospital Philadelphia corrected a rare birth defect with the heart outside the chest in an operation only the second of its kind. LaVar Bordley, born in Wilkes-Barre, underwent a two hour procedure to return the heart to the body, with plans for a second surgery to relocate abdominal organs once he gains strength.

Rates Set For New Plant Data

Erie County commissioners have not decided on a plan to retain engineering firms to gather data for a proposed United States Steel steel plant near the Erie County line. The county may use state funds to conduct its own research via the planning department with $10,000 to $15,000 expected from the State Department of Community Affairs. D A Johnson Associates of Corry and Northwest Engineers of Tidioute are slated to do the engineering at rates including $25 per hour for a professional engineer, $18 for a technician, and $7 for a secretary. Northwest rates were not listed but are said to be in line with Johnson's. No decision until Monday when Commissioner Michael Flatley returns from Harrisburg.
