Jamestown Chautauqua County records a February unemployment rate of 9.8 percent, up from 9.2 percent a year earlier. The total labor force rises to 61,400 with 6,000 unemployed, while 100 workers were placed out of work in February. New births listed include a daughter for Mr. and Mrs. Fred Clayton and a son for Mr. and Mrs. Perry Tillotson. John Wojtecki of Union City adds another birth note.
Local artist George Gage of 323 East Street plans an April exhibition at the National Bank of Corry. His semi abstract paintings use the pallet knife with vivid color contrasts to create exciting visual effects. Gage, born in South Tirol, Austria, lived in Innsbruck during World War II and came to the United States at age nine. He studied at Washington University and served as an army illustrator at Fort Monmouth.
Washington report faults stocking methods in inner city stores as a driver of rising food costs. It cites an inefficient delivery system from wholesalers to retailers and small merchants placing multiple orders, which raises per-order delivery charges and strains storage space.

Philip Sample of Cooper Pentax presented a $100 check to Mrs. Louie Eastman for the Northwestern Pennsylvania Heart Association campaign. Morgan Beverly announced other gifts including $25 from Clifford and Mrs. Buesink and $25 from United Steelworkers Local 7312, helping push the local total toward the $2,200 goal. The drive will continue through the summer with donations welcome through ward and township chairmen.
