The GOP in Harrisburg remains opposed to Gov. Lawrence’s 214 million dollar sales tax plan as House Republicans refuse to back the bill. Democratic leaders push for a second vote amid a stalled effort to break the stalemate, while talks on teacher pay rise emerge in Pennsylvania.
Mexico expelled two Soviet embassy attaches and declared two more unwelcome in connection with the Easter weekend rail strike. Officials said the strike was a Communist plot and Vallejo, the rail union leader, cooperated with Soviet contacts. The government reported 140 trains back in service as workers returned to jobs.
Harrisburg AP reports a 48 hour delay in enforcement for drivers lacking 1951 license tags. State police were instructed to pause arrests until midnight Thursday to allow late applications to arrive, despite the March 31 deadline fixed by law. About 2,110,000 registrations issued. 150,000 more than last year.
Tacoma Washington Two soldiers died when a car hit a utility pole on a curve on the Mt Reinier Highway south of Tacoma Pfc Warren Kingaid 21 of New Castle Pennsylvania and Sp4 Elliot H Valine Jr 24 of Danbury Connecticut were killed both stationed at Fort Lewis Washington.
In a last minute move over radio TV and public address systems ten unemployed people in Corry qualified for an additional 18 weeks of unemployment benefits under the extended temporary act. The Bellows of the Employment Service said the deadline was 8 pm and that several may have missed filing earlier. Civil Defense assisted with a mobile unit to reach residents in four wards from 6 30 to 8 pm.
The Corry Savings and Loan founded April 9 1924 celebrates its 35th anniversary. It has grown from 300000 in 1947 to over 3.5 million in assets this year and has paid 3 percent dividends to shareholders since 1937. The firm moved to 10 South Center in 1927 then to 25 North Center in 1952. Attorney Walter L. Peake remains solicitor since inception. Public prizes registration offered with awards on May 1.
An arc welder John H. McDade 39 watches fellow worker Walter Barrett 40 leap from a deck. Barrett’s clothes caught fire and spread as he tore away. He plunged 17 feet through an access hole to the lower deck and died aboard the Kitty Hawk in Camden New Jersey.
Cory Area High School singers join over 200 students from northwestern Pennsylvania for a two day choral festival later this month. The event will be directed by Marlowe W. Johnson of Thiel College Choir Greenville Pa.
Students from a day begin rehearsals for the festival on April 16 with continuous practice and a concert for the public on April 17 at Cosby Avenue High School auditorium. A parents concert follows on April 18 with plans for receptions, parties, and a final banquet. Marlowe Johnson, founder of the Thiel College Choir now directing, leads the event.
The Citizens Bank completed the purchase of the brick building next to its West Main Street banking house. Cherry Hardware occupies the first floor and the PennsylvAwue State Employment Service the front. The bank plans expansion space and has leased to Cherry Hardware to run long term.
Plans for Corry Area sign School post prom party proceed with minor details. Mrs Walter Deutschlander chairs the all night event at Corry Moose Lodge 98 on April 4 after the prom. Juniors and seniors with dates invited, as are their parents. Refreshments prizes and dancing by the Jesters Youngsville orchestra.
Mrs Raymonamuvin leaves the local draft board after more than two years as secretary. Mrs W Kenneth Shindledecker replaces her, having joined March 23 after working at McInnes Steel Co. The board resumes full-time operation after a curtailed period.

A string of tornadoes or raking storms swept north central Texas and nearby Oklahoma causing extensive property damage and injuries. They warned a summit this summer hinges on progress at the Washington talks with Herter Lloyd and Couve de Murville and Selwyn Lloyd and Murville.
A six year old McKeesport girl died in a Tuesday night house fire that destroyed the home. Neighbors crawled to pull the husband, 58, from the blaze as firefighters searched two hours for the child. The family dog also perished and a firefighter’s mother died of a heart attack watching the scene. Damage was estimated at $10,000.
The Corry Area teachers group starts a two phase fund drive to raise 1200 for Corry students to participate in a foreign exchange program for 1960. Local residents business clubs and PTA groups are asked to donate or fund raise. The aim is to send a Corry student abroad for a year and bring a foreign student to Corry for a summer program.
Washington AP reports Meade Alcorn plans to resign as Republican national chairman after holding the post since January 1957. The 51 year old Hartford lawyer may run for Connecticut governor in 1962 and could stay briefly to aid a party reorganization ahead of the 106th Republican National Convention.
Vera Green of Northboro Massachusetts was acquitted of income tax evasion in Federal Court. The judge ruled she was not required to report eleven thousand dollars allegedly embezzled from Botwinik Bros. over four years. Defense cited a 1946 Wilcox decision.
An embargo on live reporting from an Amer can Cancer Society seminar in Excelsior Springs Missouri triggered a dispute with Chicago Tribune staff. Roy Gibbons of the Tribune resisted the 24 hour delay sought by the Society and its science editor Pat McGrady. The Tribune noted their editors did not agree to a similar delay and would report developments as they occurred. A second brief reports the death of postal inspector Thomas P Mooney at 61 in St Louis.
