World Tourney Cancelled In Split With PGA

George S May, who has distributed nearly two million dollars in golf purses over 17 years, cancels the Tom OShanter World Tournament amid a financial dispute with the PGA. He cites entry fee demands and revenue loss, noting last year 223,115 in entry fees and arguing many PGA events collect none. May says contracts would cost about 40,000 more this year due to prize increases and appearance guarantees for top players. Harold Sargent calls the move a surprise and will consult with officials.

Fulbright Plan Sees Loans Cut and Rates Raised

The two billion dollar authorisation proposed by Senator Fulbright was reduced to a halt and the maximum loan rate raised to 3 percent. Fulbright prepared an amendment to lower the rate back to three percent as originally proposed. The current hundred million dollar program now faces a 4 percent to 4 percent cap, with Eisenhower ordering faster spending. Fulbright argues high rates limit eligibility to cities with poor credit. Projects would cover streets, bridges, parking, airports, parks, hospitals, health centers, garbage plants, schools, libraries, sewage facilities and police and fire buildings.
