State Tops in Hard Coal Field
The Pennsylvania State Planning Board reports Pennsylvania produces most of the world’s anthracite, with open mining rising to 1,603,000 tons in 1947 and old banks yielding 6,403,000 tons. Minor deposits exist in Rhode Island and western states, while the national coal picture shows limited higher quality sources in Alaska, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Washington. The National Wildlife Federation notes the barn owl preys on rodents and consumes its own wells in a night.
