Tragedy as traction engine collapses Ida county bridge
McDermott, 35, was killed when a traction engine broke through a ten foot Ida county bridge near Ida Grove. Ralph Finch saved himself by jumping. twenty men moved the engine off McDermott. He leaves a wife and nine children. The bridge was historically creased yet deemed safe.

Thos S Bird Dies One Week After Illness
T s Bird a well known Correctionville resident died September 2 1914 at home from hardening of the arteries. He was employed as an engineer at the Sec City canning factory and returned home ill. Funeral was held Friday afternoon at the Methodist church with Rev M E Spahr officiating and interment in Correctionville cemetery. He leaves wife three sons and two daughters, four sisters and many relatives.

Chautauqua closes a successful session in Correctionville
The Correctionville Chautauqua wrapped up last week with gross receipts of 1640 and a record surplus of 520 for the local association. The Travers Wick Chautauqua system handled the event, costing 800 to start, with proceeds split after that. About 420 adult season tickets at 2.60 and 35 child tickets at 1.00 were sold, and pledges for next year reached around 300. The venture drew strong local enthusiasm, and a thank you note from a grateful attendee praised the well run event.

Local baseball doubleheader at Cope land park Friday
The three big ball games feature Holstein on Friday at Cope land park with a double header against Anthon. Cockburn held Anthon to eight hits while striking out eight as the locals lost 7 to 5. The Bloomers beat the locals 10 to 5 with Petty shutting them out last four innings. A large crowd enjoyed fast infield play by Ruth Egan and strong pitching from Cockburn and Petty.
