Coronado Chamber Urges Bond Issue For City Improvements

A Coronado Chamber of Commerce letter to the City Council urges a comprehensive bond issue for land acquisitions and improvements. It calls for Hog Ranch 208 acres on the Silver Strand, Golf Course area, a public park and pool, First Street property, a new Civic Center Jail fire house city hall, library upgrades, Orange Avenue beautification, Glorietta Bay dredging, Glorietta Link old Tent City development, and a Sewage Disposal Plant.

Coronado Chamber Plans Christmas Street Decorations

At a Coronado Chamber of Commerce meeting Tuesday night, pro tem chair John D. Schroeder urged quick action to secure and install Christmas street decorations. The chamber will partner with the Coronado Merchants Association and local merchants to provide superior decorations, after Laurence P. Priddy presented several decorating programs from a local decorating concern.

Association Favors Recall Not Sponsoring Action

The Coronado Merchants Association says it favors a recall of Mayor Archibald Abel and Councilman George Neal but does not plan to sponsor any recall action. A recent meeting showed a majority favored recall. no sponsorship was intended, though rumors persist of a future move after the year begins.

Coronado Mortuary Plans Formal Opening

Coronado Mortuary will hold a formal opening this week end. Located at Second Street and C Avenue the new facility will be open Friday Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The building is described as among the most modern in Southern California.

Elementary schools enroll 859 students total 1121

Coronado Elementary Junior High opened with 859 students this Tuesday, 72 fewer than last year, while Glorietta started with 262 students, up 42. Combined total is 1121 with more enrollments expected before month end. No waiting lists exist and provisions cover all school age students.

Coronado High School Opens With Bigger Enrollment

Coronado High School opened last Tuesday with 433 students, 30 more than last year, including a few veterans taking extra courses. Girls outnumber boys by 30, and 11 new faculty members have joined from universities nationwide. An adult badminton class runs in Carruthers Gym from 7:30 to 9:30 on Mondays and Thursdays, with enrollment open.

Walter Hepner Describes Germany Conditions to Rotarians

San Diego State College President Walter Hepner told Coronado Rotarians that Germans dislike Americans but want them to stay to aid food supplies prevent internal fighting and keep Russia out. He recently returned from a three month Army occupation tour aiding Germany’s education system. He spoke before a large Coronado Rotary Club luncheon in the Hotel del Coronado Terrace Room.

Entertainments by Old Time Players at Tent City Beach

In 1914 a company of English players performed nightly on Tent City beach below the Hotel del Coronado. The events happened amid afternoon and evening band concerts. The photo was lent by Mrs. Harry Omar of 546 Palm Avenue, a regular Tent City attendee.

Coronado Kindergartens Open for 1947 48 enrollment

Children living in Coronado must register within the first 30 days of school to attend. After October 2 transfers from other schools may enter. A transfer slip and birth certificate are required by state law. No waiting list exists this year. Provision is made for all eligible children.

Week Day School of Religious Education Opens September 10

Coronado announces a new Week Day School of Religious Education to run next Wednesday for third to sixth graders. The program, a collaboration of Board of Education, public schools, teachers, and local churches, provides supplemental religious instruction in each child’s chosen church. Classes meet at Coronado grammar school with dismissal by room. families receive registration cards to be signed. FPHA project students attend on Thursdays at the Recreation Building, and Catholic students attend Sacred Heart on Seventh Street and C Avenue.
