Frank Ahrens, newly elected Kiwanis club president, returned Friday from the regional convention of the organization held in Reno.
June Christine Weigel age 65 of 921 I Ave Coronado died Sunday in a San Bernardino hospital. Arrangements are pending at Coronado Mortuary.
Lt. T. A. Coronel USN and Mrs Coronal with children Pat and Mike have arrived from Mare Island and reside at the Coronado Club. Also traveling with them is Mrs Coronal’s sister Miss W R Cooley of Pueblo Colorado.
On the Civil Service Commission recommendation Mrs Hazel Kestell of 611 Sixth Street was appointed to the new secretary clerk post to Police Chief J W Jordan at the last council meeting. The $150 monthly salary includes a 10 percent cost of living bonus. Kestell has lived in Coronado for 18 months after her husband died in a plane crash. She served in the Marine Corps during the war and resides with her 17 month old daughter.
Chief J. W. Jordan announced Coronado led six other cities in traffic safety for the three months ending September 30. Figures were compiled by the San Diego Police Department.
Cyne D. McKinnon former Sango publisher and Democratic congress candidate was guest at the Coronado Lions Club luncheon at the Colony restaurant. Introduced by Wm. Gerelich the club announced a Seeing Eye Dog replacement for San Diego youth Harold Pierce, with Rev. Kenneth B. Carson visiting the Pasadena canine training center to meet the dog.
Five Coronado teenage youths are held at the Anthony Home in San Diego after allegedly slugging sailor Clyde Higdon of the U S naval hospital on the Silver Strand. Higdon says he was robbed of $20 then driven toward Tijuana. Police captured one youth asleep in a parked car at First Street and D Avenue, and the others were rounded up by Sgt. Brandes and Officer Price.
The Planning Commission unanimously voted to recommend to the City Council a proposed new planning and zoning ordinance with an updated zoning map. A public hearing before the Council, with consultant Gordon Whitnall present, is slated for Friday November 5 after last night’s meeting.
Coronado's Battery B of the National Guard, attached to the 730th Anti Aircraft Artillery unit, will face federal recognition inspection by the Sixth Army inspector general on Tuesday at the Brigade Armory in San Diego. The unit, activated this month under Lt. Ly man L. Riley with 19 local enlisted men, will temporarily share space at the San Diego Armory until a planned Coronado headquarters is ready on the Strand.
Memorial Day services in West Plesa Park honored Shelby Millar Senior with the Civic Service Award of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. The award cited his work with Coronado juvenile programs and police duties since 1923. Parade, prayers, and songs followed the presentation as Scouts and the high school choir performed.
The California Water and Telephone Company seeks higher water rates in the Coronado district. The State Public Utilities Commission will hear the request at 10 am tomorrow at San Diego Civic Center. Coronado officials Mayor George F Neal and City Attorney J R Goodbody will represent the city. Commissioner R H Mittelstaedt and Examiner G K Syphers will conduct the hearing.
Governor Harl Warren Republican candidate for vice president arrives in San Diego for a final southern California campaign swing. He will deliver an evening address at Hoover High School Auditorium at 8 30 p m and the speech will be broadcast over KSCT station.
Memorial flower service for Navy and Marine Corps war dead to be held next Sunday as part of Navy Day week. Flowers from relatives will be placed aboard San Diego vessels, then scattered at sea. Twenty six ports designated to receive flowers from relatives, veterans, and groups. Individuals to send one flower to the 11th Naval District public information officer by October 23.
The City Council awarded Bank of America the 175000 Silver Strand ranch acreage bond issue after competing bids from six other California banks. Lions Club plans to raise 5200 for Coronado Hospital X ray equipment with 44 members volunteering to solicit Community Chest funds.

A Coronado police car driven by Officer Walter Sonnenberg collided with Nora Schwenker’s car at Fourth Street and Orange Avenue during rain. No injuries reported. damages estimated at 350 to 400 dollars. It was the first police vehicle accident since 1945.
Mayor George F. Neal of Coronado endorses State Highway 199 inclusion of the Coronado San Diego Ferry. He urges eminent domain to condemn the ferry company and operate the route as part of the state highway system, urging immediate action by the Highway Commission.
