The City of Coronado completed annexation of the Silver Strand area last week with a certified copy of the approving city ordinance filed in Sacramento by the Secretary of State.
The June meeting of the Coronado Republican Women’s Club will be an open discussion of the party platform and policy at La Avenida after lunch at 1. Mrs. John Blakely, president, will present caucus suggestions for revision by attendees. A county wide grass roots effort seeks ideas from Coronado and other San Diego clubs for a concise platform. Reservations via Mrs. J. D. MacMullen.
Five Coronadians will graduate from the U S Naval Academy in Annapolis this Friday with diplomas and commissions as ensigns. The cadets include James Styer Hurst son of Mrs Adrian Melvin Hurst 225 Palm Avenue Robert G Hunt son of Mrs Robert G Hunt 820 D Avenue Edward C Waller III nephew of Mr and Mrs Louis Millen 1000 Adella Avenue Peter L Fullinwider son of Mrs Henry F Bruce 1133 Olive Avenue and Richard W Haley son of Mr and Mrs Joseph P Haley 853 F Avenue.
Fifty minutes of awards marked Coronado High School’s annual pre graduation event. New student body officers were named: Buddy Sykes president, Dean Hunter vice president, Dolores Paden secretary, Dick Heckard treasurer. Kurt Storch won best all around athlete with a new trophy from Robert Burkheimer. Daryl Foley presented gold footballs and $100 to Coach Hal Niedermeyer for the Athletic Injury Fund. Marie McKinney was named outstanding girl athlete. Special awards went to Frank Wells, Ollie Bisbee, Gladys Gladden, Joanna Rohrbough, Steve Barchet, Louise Wigebert, and Arlene Karns. Local essay contest winners included Viola Chisum, Justine Jackson, Betty Mott, Maryellen Melton, and Noel Adkins. Melton won a $50 bond. Other honorees listed include Olive Mull, Peg Carney, Ward LeHardy, Pat Nieman, Sally Mercer, Gloria Alexander, Mary Lou Russell, Anne Magly, and Betty Shands.
Lieutenant junior grade Oscar Folsom of the Navy and his wife have relocated from Chula Vista and are residing on D street, marking a new community addition.
The Bailey Trophy remains at Coronado Yacht Club as Chuck Soderberg wins the Opening Day Handicap aboard Annette. B Kempff’s Surprise places second and D Wellington’s Betty places third. Visitors from San Diego Yacht Club and Newport join, with Earle Childs leading the opening day program, and the club now officially open for the season.
Viola Chisum, a high school senior, won the grand prize for the essay Driver Safety in the Safety Council contest. Ward LeHardy and Sally Mercer earned $5 prizes for best boy and second place essays, while Gloria Alexander received an honorable mention for Operation Graveyard. Judges chosen by A K Fuller included Pop Millar, Thomas Stacy, and Richard Watkins.
Arthur L. Cohen announced Coronado has raised slightly more than half its quota for the Year of Opportunity Drive. He urged more funds, stating the need is the greatest in history due to thousands of displaced persons to be moved and resettled in Israel this year.
The Coronado Coordinating Council will meet at the high school at 8 p m next Monday before summer recess. The meeting will include the annual election of officers for the new term starting in September. Alfred Laing is nominated for president and Paul A Stouffer for vice president. Other officers are to be appointed. The nominating committee includes A E Schaefer Mrs Lewis Coxe and Shelby Millar.
Dr. Robert Richardson of San Diego State discusses the Census of the Americas at Wednesday's Rotary Club meeting held at Hotel del Coronado. Sam Bogan served as program chairman. Dr. Robert W. Chamberlain was inducted into the club at last week's meeting by President A. J. Gray Jr.
William Rushton Bowker, former UC Southern California physics professor, author of Bizzy Quizzy and collector of art objects, antiques, and rare instruments, died Tuesday at his home 441 Alameda Blvd Coronado. He leaves two daughters Elizabeth and Emily Bowker and brother John Bowker. Funeral services will be held by Coronado Mortuary.
Eight week instrumental courses start June 13 announced by Supt. A E Schaefer. Morning sessions include elementary band orchestra rehearsals sections for woodwinds brass strings percussion and majorettes. At least two evenings weekly reserved for high school students who work daytime jobs.
Fred Bierig renowned labor management relations expert will speak on duties and responsibilities of industrial labor relations at the Colony Thursday noon. He is presented by O R Vosburg with new members Dr George Stokes and Joseph Cafferetta joining the club. A Bicycle Safety Campaign is planned as a major project, with Pop Millar Sam Tepper and Max Well Old heading the committee.
Miss Mary Elizabeth Knapp will wed Lt. James Blanding Dick on June 18. Hostess Miss Charlene Pler entertained Wednesday evening with guests bringing kitchen accessories and favorite receipts for the bride-elect.
A year end review of Cambria High School seniors and juniors highlights include Marcy Brooks as Girl First Citizen and Valedictorian, Jack McCants as Boy First Citizen, and Jean Chan salutatorian. Seniors like Jimmie Vait and Marcy Brooks are celebrated. dance events, term officers, and the yearbook staff are noted with plans for graduation and next year’s senior class leadership.
