Coronado City Council heard strong citizen opposition to a proposed new business zoning ordinance at a second public hearing. Merchants endorsed higher license taxes and protested rates seen as unfair while the council postponed action on the ordinance and discussed a Civil Service pay survey. The meeting also approved participation in the State Retirement System and awarded a 1949 gasoline supply bid to Standard Oil California.

Burglaries Linked to Sailor Arrest in Coronado

Coronado police report that George Washington Winston, 25, a seaman on the U S S Bairoko, confessed to burglaries at two residences here stealing $10 in each case. The offenses occurred December 11 at Comdr. Frank Patriarca’s home and December 19 at Mrs Vernon Williams’s home. Winston was arrested Tuesday night while prowling near Williams’s residence. He will be turned over to naval authorities for prosecution.

First Street Decision Deferred to Next Year

The Ames City Council postponed the First Street dispute to the January 4 regular session after Planning Commission action. Developers for Bayview Estates will work with engineers to include the Avenue extension and six foot pathway in final subdivision maps for submission then. Residents protested the lack of public right of way to the bayside area, while officials consider state access requirements.

Coronado Opens Island Bowl With Four Lanes and Shop

The Island Bowl at 952 Orange Avenue will feature four bowling alleys and a street‑facing refreshment shop. About $100,000 was invested. the building was renovated by Harry Graham. Christmas Gifts Delivered for Dolores Paden at Coronado Home

Dolores Paden a Coronado High School student held for allegedly dancing professionally without a state permit received nearly 50 Christmas presents from local friends. The gifts were delivered by Mrs. W. W. Harvey and four classmates, who urged the court to release her. Paden and her mother dispute the age and occupation charge, with a jury trial set for March 29 and a juvenile court hearing on January 12 in San Diego.
