Forty six German and Austrian reservists bound from New York to native lands aboard the Italian steamer America were seized by British authorities at Gibraltar on August 24. Aboard the ship, a dramatic boarding by a British cruiser led to the transfer of prisoners to Gibraltar. The operation included a searchlight, a scaling ladder, and an inquiry of passengers before the Germans and Austrians were confined, with about 500 others from other steamers held at Gibraltar.
