Reports from Athens Sofia and Amsterdam describe mass Rumanian mobilization including cavalry. Rail traffic to move troops is suspended in north western Rumania, horses requisitioned, and reserves mobilized as the war widens on the western front.
Trustees R D Willits and E A Stobbs failed to keep the $1 25 tax rate for the next year. Four trustees are in a deadlock with W J Pentelow holding the key. Genereux and Mueller advocate a gradual plan to erase a $7000 deficit. The meeting authorized street work notices and a track spur decision while North Main and River street improvements were approved with bids to be sought.
Redlands announces three new features for the upcoming school opening on September 20. Superintendent C. H. Covell says the program will include girls athletic work led by a woman instructor, a physical director for boys, and an agriculture course.
Fishermen at Little Bear on Sunday reported good sport with opinions divided on the best spots. Early morning fishing was best due to cooled lake water, and autumn tang rose as winds shifted. Waltons predict peak fishing through December 1 as ducks arrive. Mrs. Clarence White and sons returned from a San Francisco exposition trip.
A 68 year old Texas migrant mother, Mrs. W H Witt, in a rear room near Folsom Prison, pleads with tears for mercy for her son Glen Witt condemned to die September 24 for involvement in the murder of William Alexander. Witt and accomplice Charles Oxnam were the robbers who attacked Alexander and his sisters. Oxnam was wounded in the ensuing clash.
County engineers plan to advertise bids on a ten mile Moreno hills section linking Riverside to the eastern county. Nearly 60 miles in the desert segment will be awarded this fall to finish before a hot spell. Remaining eastern sections include Palm Springs to India and India to Mecca surfacing, plus Mecca to Salton Sea, Mecca toward Blythe, and Blythe end. Only three contracts then remain: Elsinore to Corona, Santa Ana canyon paving, and Temecula grade paving.
Preliminary work began on a 50890 dollar residence planned beside the George Junior Republic near Pomona. Mrs Eldridge M Fowler and daughter Miss Kate Fowler, Pasadena residents, will occupy the home and support the republic through active involvement. The brick will be produced by republic youths in a brick plant donated by Hot Point Heating Company of Ontario, with hundreds of bricks already made daily.
C O Rankin a lineman for the Southern Sierras Power company was run down and crushed at Eighth and Market streets by Bert Starry of Los Angeles. Rankin’s injuries were believed serious but he showed signs of recovery after the crash attributed to his defective eyesight.
William Sproule president of the Southern Pacific argues before bankers that railroads are owned by a broad public, not a few magnates. He cites 600 000 shareholders, 250 000 miles of track, 1 750 000 jobs, and rising taxes from 62 million to 140 million dollars, noting the public's stake in railroad transportation.
In Indianapolis on September 14 a sensational defense claim arose in Mayor Joseph Bell’s election conspiracy trial. M A Ryan alleged a Chicago training school for perjurers run by the prosecutor’s agents, with David R Masterson hiring men to travel to Indianapolis and spy on hotels and voting sites.
A burglar left a taunting note at the C Cappel residence on West Mission Street after looting $100 and $16 in cash last August. George Nave was arrested today for selling some jewelry and police say his handwriting matches the note and other jewelry from the same theft was found on him.
A special Federal grand jury is planned in New York to investigate alleged German and Austrian plots to disrupt labor in U S munitions factories. It will focus on postal law violations and interstate commerce interference, with hundreds of witnesses and Det. Archibald’s outlined letter as a key element.
Four days after a hypodermic injection that usually ends in death, Dr. W. W. Kenney was declared recovered. The doctor had taken the poison by mistake on Thursday morning, and the incident ended in a surprising turn of events as his health improved.
Report states the California Associated Raisin company in Fresno sold between 4000 and 5000 tons of raisins to robbers in Great Britain. Destination unclear, but believed to be part of an army ration.
