Telegraphing from Petrograd the Morning Post reports Russian armies advancing on the Vistula line driving Germans westward toward Cracow. The piece notes Austrians fall back, Russians approach Lemberg and Grodek, and aim to trap German forces with Carpathian terrain and marshlands aiding a decisive westward push.
The official information bureau reports a strong squadron and flotillas swept the North Sea up to Hegeland bight yesterday and today. The German fleet did not interfere, and no German ships were encountered during the operation.
The Turkish ambassador told Washington that past special privileges or restrictions on Turkey have been abrogated. Officials interpret this as referring to English influence in Egypt and believe Turkey is preparing to enter the war.

Armstrong tallies 480 in fifty shots, just shy of the fifty shot world record. Armstrong was on the U S team for the last Olympic games.
General Carranza, head of the constitutionalists, issued an order banning army officers from leaving the capital under penalty of death. The decree also promoted General Francisco Villa to general of division. Oaxaca’s governor refused to join rebels seeking Felix Diaz's presidency. I O W Reynolds made a business trip to Los Angeles.
Miss Viola Ashcroft daughter of Mrs RE Ashcroft married James Thompson in a private 2 pm ceremony at 704 Joy Street conducted by Rev DW Utter of the First Christian church. Attendants included family members from Prado and San Diego with plans for a Los Angeles honeymoon. Both are active in the Christian church and choir.
London dispatch reports Pope Benedict XVI has asked ambassadors of warring nations to gauge their governments sentiment on a papal peace appeal.
Dems of the ways and means committee finish the war revenue tax bill setting a three percent freight transportation tax. Beer rises fifty cents, domestic wines twenty cents per gallon. Net estimate: 107 million dollars yearly. Freight tax applies to rail and ship shipments including express. parcel post excluded.

London dispatch says the great battle persisted yesterday with Germans driven back beyond Marines. Sir John French reports the First British corps buried 200 German dead and captured 12 Maxim guns.
Washington reports Great Britain France Spain and China agree to sign peace treaties with the United States while Germany Russia and Japan accept the principle of these treaties though drafts are not yet ready. Greece and Turkey talks near signature as Britain insists on decisive victory over Germany.
PETROGRAD reports that Japan has joined the alliance in not making a separate peace without allied consent. A Tokio dispatch says Japan informed Russia it would not conclude peace with Germany until Europe’s war ends, even if occupying Kiao Chau beforehand.
The Women's State Democratic club of California urged President Wilson to call warring powers to pause hostilities for an international conference to pursue universal disarmament. A platform endorses the president, home rule in taxation, seaman's service bill, child labor laws, and civil service reform. Resolutions largely from Mrs Grace B Caukin and Mrs Anthony Caminetti.
