Architects prepare plans for a brick two story building on the east side of Main street just south of Fourth to house a store serving Mexican and Italian trade with provisions, fruits, and vegetables. The project follows local ordinances, aims for a modern flush front, heavy foundation, and may add a second story later.
A crowd fills Patton courts for a Riverside Redlands Hemet Colton event with entries from Corona and more. Dan Zimmerman loses to Leslie Day of Redlands, while Paul O Connor defeats Zimmerman in three sets. Dole of Riverside Y M C A advances to singles final as doubles semis include Zimmerman Wilcox and Cole Bakewell Riverside. finals set for Sept 17 at 3 pm with Garvey Samson Corona to decide doubles. Trophies donated by San Bernardino and Highland merchants will be awarded. Score by rounds notes Zimmerman Hems loss to Godbey Glass.
A Sunday union meeting of four local churches led by Rev. Wentworth discussed curb speeding on Grand Boulevard and formed a three member committee with Chas Hoss Dr E H Smith and G P McCorkle to approach the Corona Auto Club. Rev Reynolds warned against liquor licenses ahead of Corona races and delivered a sermon on conditions in Mexico.
Miss Inez Smith has been appointed the new cashier at the Corona Gas and Electric Light office. She succeeds the former cashier and takes on duties at the local utility office.
At a regular meeting, library board member G W Waterbury urged boosting next year's library funding from about 2 500 to 3 000 or 3 200 dollars arguing the library has grown, needs new publications, and has not raised salaries in five years. Mayor and officials noted action will await annual appropriations.
A local Escondido preacher enters a Grand Avenue auto race driving his own car. The Rev Chas Wentworth, Rev F W Reynolds, and Rev J D Houston are noted boosters of the Corona races and the Grand MSoulevard plan. The minister will compete in the upcoming September 9th event.
Riverside and Corona boast Riverside county’s only dailies. The Corona Daily Independent launched Monday with George M. Blair as editor and proprietor, marking Corona as the first city in the Circle City to host a daily newspaper. Residents express enthusiasm and pledge support to ensure the venture succeeds.
A Corona source reports that Mr Blair expects broad backing from local business circles and others as he launches a new daily publication just ahead of next week’s events that will draw wide public attention to the Crown City.
Last week's cleanup days in Corona boosted the town’s look as residents and merchants cleared homes and shops. The effort extended into today to finish tasks including trimming pepper trees, smoothing Main Street with a road grader, and improvements at Lincoln grammar school led by janitor Mr. Moreland. Old tennis court backstops were demolished.
Santa Fe will run three special trains to Corona on September 9 to handle thousands of speed fans. The Los Angeles train leaves at six a.m. with 200 Los Angeles police, Pasadena departs at 7:30 a.m., and a Le Grande station connection follows at 8:10 a.m. Return trains depart Corona at 4:15 and 4:45 p.m. from Corona, with a separate train for San Bernardino Colton and Riverside leaving at 8:10 a.m. and returning at 4:20 p.m. Officials say enough trains will be provided to accommodate all attendees.
Rain limited turnout to 75 attendees with 30 from the city. Visitors came from Riverside Elsinore and Perris. Rev. Chas Scott of Pasadena spoke and Dr. Alfred Inwood spoke briefly. A picnic dinner was served at noon and afternoon attractions included the plunge and the canyon.
Dr Staley outlines procedures for Washington building pupils and staff changes. Returning high school students report dates September 2 and 12 for registration while others join later. Vaccination certificates or conscientious scruples must be presented by parents for entering pupils as required by law.
At the Riverside county supervisors meeting the Pacific Electric request for a deeded right of way down Magnola avenue was denied. An offer of a long time franchise in its place was presented. Supervisor Flaherty led the opposition to granting a deeded right of way. Continued on page four.
