Entrance salaries run from 840 to 900 dollars annually with rapid advancement. top pay up to 1200 dollars for those with 85 percent stenography score and two years office experience. A London officer and the manager of a Sheffield working men’s hotel were pranked when a caller posed as Transport Officer Ridley and ordered 300 recruits to billet at the hotel. The fake Ridley issued commands, a recruit shaved him, others tended boots, a sentry stood watch, and a forged note claimed military authority. The ruse ended when a real officer arrived and Ridley vanished.
