Women Police Volunteers Form in London For Duty

A suffragist led Women Police Volunteers unit trains daily in London for future duty. Known as the Women Police Volunteers, they wear navy serge uniforms with WV P shoulder insignia and badges. Led by Miss Daner Dawson and others, the group focuses on self defense, first aid, and court procedures, with hours from two to eight daily. They will operate in streets, parks, depots and courts while aiming to prove government value of women in policing.

Navy orders Marconi station closed over wireless alert

Admiral Moore at Honolulu must close the Marconi wireless telegraph station unless a satisfactory explanation is given for sending a message announcing the arrival of the German cruiser Grier. The Grier remains in the harbor as Japanese cruisers hover nearby and internment seems likely for the rest of the war.

The State Supreme Court in New York on October 16 cited the Rock Island Railroad company to show cause why a receiver should not be appointed and instructed steps to see Rock Island directors for damages and stockholders’ claims.

Fire guts kitchen of Robinson home in Citrus Belt district

Two women acted with presence of mind to halt a house fire at 2 40 pm in the northern city area. Mrs. Robinson closed the door trapping flames while Mrs. Chambers notified the fire department and both women pulled water on the walls before firefighters arrived. London dispatches from Paris say fighting in northern France has generally favored the Allies. German reinforcements are unlikely to reach or hold channel ports. Between Rove and Lassingny the battle remains undecided, but allied hammering suggests Germans have given up hope of reaching Paris by that route.

British Cruiser Hawke Sunk by German Submarine

The British cruiser Hawke of 7 000 tons was sunk in the North Sea by a German submarine. Only 50 of the 400 crew were rescued. The sunken ship had seen active service before its loss.
