London reports show two women and six men killed with about thirty four injured after a Zeppelin raid last night. The home office notes no public buildings were damaged and fires were quickly controlled. Casualties total risen to 130 killed and 383 injured since the war began.
Mrs Sargent of the New Hotel Del Rey notes an Independent advertisement extended reduced board and room rates leading two guests to choose the hotel as their home. She believes the ad also informed at least two regular boarders.
J. HE. Larrabee of Los Angeles is in the city visiting with his relatives.
The Corona Library promotes weekly advertising with direct response. Last week its Columbus program drew over a hundred attendees and most Columbus materials circulated quickly. The library offers resources on publicizing and is hosting talks on travel, coins, citrus culture, and chickens in Corona.
Word reached this city of the death of Mrs. H. W. Garrison formerly local resident. She reportedly died in Los Angeles late last week and was buried Monday. Further details are not available at present.
The Corona Dollar toured downtown this morning visiting eleven stores by 2 pm as locals spend it to gauge home buying. It circulated from Duell's Cash Grocery to Otto's Grocery and through hardware, drug, mercantile, barber shops, and a PE agent before returning to circulation with a new tag planned for tomorrow.
The Corona Country Club held its annual meeting at the West Olive Street clubhouse Tuesday evening. Stanley W. Garvey was elected president for the coming year, with T. C. Jameson, Herbert Key, Frank Harlow Jr., Fred E. Snidecor, Dee McConnell and C. A. Holloway named directors. Reports by committees noted progress, new members joined, and Garvey received an opal stick pin for winning the recent handicap tennis tournament. The event included refreshments and dancing.
The general treasurer reports United States Episcopalians have raised an Emergency Fund near $400 000 to stabilize the Board of Missions. Gifts came from many donors in small amounts without a whirlwind drive. Members contributed one day’s income and about $10 000 more than last year. The missionary treasury is debt free for the first time in eight years, with St Johns church aiding the effort.
The city chain gang was put out of commission after most workers became violently ill from eating wild castor beans found at their site. They were returned to the jail and treated medically. Today several Mexicans felt the effects but none were seriously injured.
Mrs P B Smith has completed remodeling her Garretson avenue residence into a two family apartment house. The work spared no expense with the best fittings and finer details aimed at comfort, and another classified ad in this issue offers one of the apartments for rent.
Geo. Oliver departed this morning for the Imperial valley to spend time looking after his ranch near Niland. He plans a period of work and oversight at the property.
