In Corona, Charley Payton was tried for selling beer to Morgan. Evidence showed the beer went to Morgan's partner, a city detective. The jury deliberated over six hours and returned a verdict of acquittal, with Payton discharged.
The senate confirmed Edward Dana Durand of California for the director of the census. Durand, a renowned economics authority, previously taught economics at Harvard and Stanford, led the U S Industrial Commission from 1900 to 1902, and served as a special census examiner and expert on street railways and electric plants.
A new club named The Knickerbocker Club forms to hold summer dances with the first event at the Del Rey hotel tomorrow night. About 200 invitations were issued yesterday. The officers are Mrs M D Hoff Fred Wilkins and Stanley Garvey. Dances will be held once a month.
Reports from Redlands Riverside and adjacent orange sections say the hot spell harmed the new crop with many claiming no crop for the coming season. Corona growers report fruit drop confined to trees in poor condition while trees in good condition held their fruit.
Mr and Mrs T C Jameson traveled to Los Angeles on Tuesday to attend commencement at Girls Collegiate School where their niece Miss Bernice Jameson was among the graduates. W H Jameson and family also went by their White Steamer to attend the class play Monday night in which Bernice participated.

Henry Albrecht was arrested on a warrant sworn by M H Lee for threatening to kill unless a debt was paid. He appeared before Recorder Hall and chose 90 days in Riverside County Jail over a $200 fine, then was taken to Riverside by Mr Gooch on the noon train.
The Blades Long Co. operates a 300,000 tree nursery opposite the depot in Corona. The firm plans to sell young orange trees and shade trees at half to a third of standard prices to land buyers in its subdivision. Maurice Poirier, an experienced nurseryman from Redlands, oversees the project.
Horace G Knowles former American minister to Roumania introduced a new melon found in Roumania. The fruit yields yellow and red flesh and is suited to most U S regions. Government stations have extensive trials and plan seed propagation and public introduction. The melon may be named Princess Marie in honor of Roumanian crown princess.
Building permits issued Monday authorize two one story brick structures on Main street. L. B. Lyons takes a $2000 permit and C. E. Lillibridge secures a $2200 permit. Contracts let and work began this morning.
Frank M. Dowling of Pasadena will deliver a humorous and instructive talk What a Boy Thursday evening June 17 at the Christian Church. The event features playful rules about applause and a mock roll of verses for those who stay to the end.

The Christian Church will tax the capacity Thursday evening as Frank M. Dowling of Pasadena lectures. Over three hundred tickets have already been sold and he is regarded as one of the era’s greatest humorists on the platform.
The Intermediate Class of the Christian Endeavor held their annual officers election at the home of Mr and Mrs Horace Allen. About thirty attended. Ernestine Kinney was named President Allen Armitage Vice President Faith Shaw Secretary Mildred Harding Pianist. Afterward a social time included a yes and no bean contest won by Allen Armitage.

Antonio Avanda, a Santa Fe employee of ten years, was struck and killed by train No. a3 at Prados today. The engineer blew the whistle from about a half mile away but Avanda did not heed warnings. The coroner arrived on the 410 train and an inquest was held. theories suggest he may have been ill or in a stupor at the time.
Plans for the new Congregational Church were shown to the congregation on Sunday. The completed building is expected to cost around $20,000 with several large subscriptions already pledged.
A poorly produced counterfeit five dollar note dated 1907 bearing Andrew Jackson was discovered at the Living National Bank of New York City. The flawed bill, lacking silk thread features and with blurred engraving, was reported to the Secret Service and is under investigation to locate its source.
