Chicago begins to host the Republican and Progressive conventions with thousands of delegates and spectators arriving. Hotels strip lobbies of furniture to curb chaos while coliseum and auditorium prepare for daily sessions and high ticket prices reach a premium.
Mr and Mrs Willard Lincoln spent Sunday on a motor trip to Los Angeles to visit friends and enjoy a day away.
Mr and Mrs W T Van Cleave of Santa Ana are spending a few days in the city visiting at the home of Mr and Mrs W C Bonser. Butte leads the state in rice production with main growing areas around Gridley Biggs Richvale and Nelson.
A well attended benefit at the Woman's clubhouse featured The Passing Show of 1416 under the Woman's Guild. Numbers ranged from Amsterdam music to Hiawatha scenes with five Ojibewa chiefs and a charming Virginia reel. Performers included Albert Byler Jack Fitch Verne Adams John Key Geo Marsden Lloyd Dickinson Edmund Stanfield and Grace Meigs pupils Viola Peeler and Rev Mook participated.
The Epworth League will host a combined business session and social at the Methodist Episcopal church tomorrow night at 7:30. Everyone is invited and urged to attend.
Wayne Rossell has relocated to Los Angeles to accept an electrical position at a local firm. He will begin work immediately and join a team noted for its specialty in electrical installations and maintenance.
A. Rowell, famed for investigating Pacific coast civic conditions, speaks tomorrow evening at 7 at the tabernacle corner Eighth and Main on San Francisco Los Angeles and San Bernardino After Dark. He challenges liquor interests to public debate and has drawn large crowds across the coast.
The Independent announces the Speedway Bullet contest now open. Boys and girls may enter from districts. a $20 Speedway Bullet will be awarded to a winner in each district. Subscriptions earn a 10 percent cash commission, with a thousand votes to start. Entries encouraged before vacation ends.
Annapolis reports a practice cruise for midshipmen along the Atlantic coast. The squadron leaves Annapolis and heads for Culebra, Guantanamo, and Provincetown, with rendezvous planned for late August after drills.
The twenty seventh annual camp meeting and conference of the Sa California conference of the Free Methodist church will be held in Alhambra from June 7 to 18. Rev J H McCabe will attend. The camp site Walhalla Park on South Wilson Street is three blocks south of the Alhambra Sanabriel Electric line and one mile northeast of Shorb station on the Southern Pacific. The park features orange trees and ample shade from walnut, eucalyptus, pine and other trees, and lies in the residence district once a popular resort.
The home wedding of Margach Newkirk and Homer Raney was held with many friends and relatives attending. The bride wore a white veil and tulle gown and the ceremony followed by a reception and trip to Arlington, Los Angeles, and beach resorts.
The Woman's Party launches its first convention amid early snags as delegates aim to impress Republicans and Progressives, asserting their voting power and demanding the right to vote.
