Paris reports four distinct battles on the eastern front with no decisive advantage. Perthes rail lines contested. Soissons trench gains by Allies. Argonne claims 1600 prisoners by Germans. Sonneheim and Alsace see hotter fighting as French attack resumes.
St Johns Newfoundland January 12 British soldiers at the front may receive canned lobster as a ration if the War department approves a Newfoundland proposal. With Germany off the market and a smaller catch last year the industry seeks government purchase at a reasonable figure to salvage shipments remaining unsold.
A. W. Bates, noted jeweler, left this morning for Los Angeles to conduct business and visit his wife.
San Bernardino officials ordered immediate work on the county highway system and a new county hospital. Highway bonds valued at 500000 will be advertised for sale February 15 while bids for 150000 hospital bonds open that day. Construction could start in April, with about 60 days for preliminaries after sale.
At a city hall meeting the volunteer fire department elected officers for the coming year. B. F. Smith was chosen as chief for another year, with Norman Raney as foreman and P. H. Grow as assistant foreman. Ed Ames serves as treasurer and Charles Miller as secretary. Ed Ames and P. H. Grow also become police patrole men during fires.
J Augustine was charged with residing in a house of ill fame after an incident Sunday night. He received a sentence of 50 dollars or 25 days in jail and was described as becoming one of the county's star boarders.
Venice plans a 300 mile auto race on March 17 under the Western Automobile association. A $8000 purse attracts top drivers including Barney Oldfield and Earl Cooper. Paul J Derkum manages the event with Leon T Shettler directing ads and A L Anderson promoting it locally.
Dispatch from Athens reports the Eighth Turkish army corps has left Damascus for the Egyptian frontier with 8,000 camels, well armed and provisioned. Beirut sources say all French and Greek subjects have been taken to Damascus in chains in an attempted escape.
Carlisle S Lentz, a medical student from Omaha, contracted hoof and mouth disease in Baltimore two weeks ago likely from infected milk. He is now on the road to recovery.
The Arizona Attorney General declares prohibition cannot be suspended even to aid a weak heart or for flavored cakes. Francisco Martinez is arrested at Douglas for bringing whiskey across the international line. In Tucson, liquor men fail again to override the prohibition law as Judge Cooper denies habeas corpus for Louis G. Herna, a saloonkeeper who sold a drink on New Year’s Day.
Secretary Jane of the Interior announced at a White House conference that actual construction of the government railroad to link the Alaskan coal fields with the coast will start in the coming spring. The meeting included the president and members of the Alaskan engineering commission, Lane, Sides, Mears, and Riggs Jr.
Prison population drops as Governor Blease grants full pardons to about 1 000 paroled convicts. About 125 prisoners remain in the state penitentiary, 2 000 in county convict squads, and 155 in the reform school. In nearly four years since taking office, clemency has reached 1 674 prisoners. he retires January 19.
Earl Baker left this morning for Placentia to spend a few days visiting Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sears.
Expatriated Belgian refugees number about 1 200 000 in Holland as Chevalier A De De Stuers notes. The Netherlands, mobilized at 350 000, feeds over 1 500 000 non producers while Britain and France also shelter large Belgians. Typhoid and scarlet fever occur but are controlled. English relief handles about 100,000 dependents amid labor market concerns. Skilled Belgians seek work beyond relief efforts.
The Citrus Belt Basketball league shows strong early momentum as Riverside defeats Chino 46 to 14, San Bernardino over Colton 57 to ? Pomona beats Corona by 16 to 12. Local high school team impressed despite a loss to Pomona, prompting coaching focus to improve and pursue the championship.
In New York on January 12 twenty three cars of navels and two cars of lemons sold. Navels held steady with prices at 1.56 to 2.42 dollars and a top price of 2.60 dollars paid to Harl Best. Lemons unchanged amid cloudy weather and a 39 degree low.
In Petrograd dated dispatch, American Ambassador George T. Marye and Secretary Raymond Baker toured near the Polish battle line. They visited a Red Cross hospital and a field hospital within miles of the fighting, witnessing refugees, devastation, and wounded Russians receiving care while Marye distributed cigarettes to the injured.
Mr Reynolds will give an illustrated talk on The High Sierras at the Woman's Club House Friday night January 15. Stephen Willard will display beautiful pictures of the range. Three of seven women who climbed Mt Whitney last summer were from Corona. The event offers a rare treat for mountain climbing enthusiasts.
