The tabernacle sermon titled Robbing God urges obedience and warns against worldly amusements. Evangelist Price reports large attendance despite weather with upcoming workers' conferences and nightly sermons at the Baptist church.
Reports allege graft within the Southern California Expositions Commission with Riverside County supervisor C. D. Hamilton stirring contention at the last meeting. Chas. L. Wilson is accused of benefiting from a $450 diamond ring and selling orange punch from donated fruit. An investigation may reveal further underhanded dealings and the selection of Walter Wagner over E. B. Collier for an assistant superintendent post.
New York citrus sales show twenty one carloads of oranges and one carload of lemons sold yesterday. Oranges held firm and averaged from 1.70 to 2.53 with a top price of 3.25 at Glendale Heights. Lemons declined 10 to 15 cents as fair weather prevailed.
The Interstate Commerce Commission authorized transcontinental railroads to set lower commodity rates to Pacific coast terminals than to inland intermountain points. It said higher ocean shipments from the Atlantic seaboard could otherwise shed western customers from Chicago area industries.
The Pacific Electric railway opens a new electric trolley extension from Arlington to Corona on February 17 to align with the National Orange Show in San Bernardino. Eight cars daily between Riverside and Corona begin service with one early morning Corona departure and a late-night Riverside return. Fares are 30 cents one-way, 60 cents round trip with commutation tickets. A March 5 celebration in Corona includes a 1:30 pm industrial parade, 2:30 pm silver spike ceremony, 3 pm ten mile Indians marathon, and a 6:30 pm banquet for about 250 guests.
In Corona the Lincoln birthday observance will be general except for business houses. High and grammar schools hold morning programs with a half day. At the high school Evangelist Price will deliver a Lincoln life story and Evangelist Guice will sing. Grammar schools combine rooms for programs.
Morris M Williams sold lots one and two in block forty one to HB Meinecke. Deed recorded in Riverside Courthouse yesterday confirming transfer.
The United States cautions Britain and Germany that widespread use of the American flag by British ships will be a grave concern. A second note to Germany warns destruction of any American vessel in the new war zone would cause serious complications and emphasizes free passage on the high seas.
Rome February 11 reports Father Ledochowaky has been elected general of the Society of Jesus the head of the Jesuits also called the Black Pope. The appointment places Ledochowaky at the helm of the Catholic order during a period of church leadership transition.
Corona business leaders sponsor a public meeting tomorrow at Glass hall to explain a proposed county charter. Freeholders who drafted the charter will answer questions and urge residents to learn details before the Saturday vote. The event is open to all interested in the measure.
Thieves stripped an adobe house on the Bikie Ranch near the San Fe depot owned by Mrs Blanche Liauu Fayette Sargent of Venice. All modern electric light fixtures and brass wall plates were removed prompting a $25 reward and police to pursue suspects.
Merit was properly rewarded at a Riverside meeting of the county fair association directors who re elected the same officers who carried the burden for two seasons and made last year’s success possible. J F Backstrand of Backstrand Grout was re elected as a prime mover of the county fair since inception.
London reports the Final British reply to the American protest over detaining cargoes at sea has been dispatched to Washington.
Reports from London and Berlin describe German efforts to shift fighting away from heavily entrenched Russians after massive casualties near Warsaw. Lodz is evacuated as East Prussia reinforces, with Russians threatening Insterburg. Noted gains for Russians in the Carpathians offset by losses, while Notredame de Lorette falls and Britain weighs stricter trade controls.
County Superintendent Cree has not acted on State Superintendent Hyatt's order barring non naturalized foreign born teachers from public schools. He awaits the official copy and will act with District Attorney Evans guidance. About 600 teachers statewide are affected, with only a few cases in Riverside County.
