Pioneers who carried mail to California before Pony Express
A 19th century mail service predates the Pony Express. In 1851 Geo Chorpenning and Absalon Woodward carried U.S. mail monthly from Salt Lake to Sacramento, facing severe winters and Indian attacks. After Woodward’s death, routes shifted to San Pedro and a Panama mail steamer to San Francisco, with later expansion to a four horse stage line.
