Demanding Lower Shipping Rates on Oranges and Lemons
A complaint filed with the interstate commerce commission seeks reduction of citrus shipping rates from Pacific coast points to the rest of the United States. The Arlington Heights Fruit Exchange of California leads about 100 producers and growers against Southern Pacific and 495 other carriers, arguing rates on lemons are unfairly higher than those on oranges and other citrus. The filing, the largest against the commission, includes major rail systems and roughly five sixths of interstate rail mileage. Growers say a proposed fifteen cent per hundred rise would cost $200 000 annually and threaten lemon production.
