Of this, 1,274,000 feet for homesteads and farms improvement, 6,778,000 feet dead timber removal, and the remainder for commercial uses. About 1,199 transactions occurred including sale contracts and free permits. Prices ranged from 20 to 34 per thousand feet depending on species and access.
Just before noon today the Wats fire department was called to extinguish a press fire in the rear of W. T. Peeler’s home on Victoria Avenue. The fire neared control but caused no damage. Peeler rushed to the scene by car after getting a hunch it was his house.

Several thousand employees at Aetna Chemical and Aetna Explosive plants in Gary area towns like Aetna and Thebes Indiana and Michigan facilities in Ishpeming will receive a 50 percent wage rise with another 50 percent possible if the European War lasts past December. An 80 percent base rise was issued August 1 and will be followed by monthly raises for five months. If war conditions permit, increases will continue through June 1 1916 reaching 100 percent over current pay.
