Riverside County will finish its new Detention Home at Arlington by early June. Contractor David Irvine leads six carpenters in building this public facility designed for dependent, delinquent, and truancy cases. It is not a penal institution, per a recent law mandating such county shelters.
E S Moulton president of Riverside Chamber and of the First National Bank will represent the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce in China in August. The Associated Chambers of Commerce of the Pacific Coast will make an extended visit at the invitation of the Chinese government. Moulton’s strong citrus ties bolster his suitability for the post.
Lloyd Dickinson son of Mrs A Dickinson celebrated his fifth birthday on Saturday April 6 at Mrs Bergan’s Grand Boulevard home. Twenty seven guests enjoyed lawn games and refreshments of ice cream wafers and assorted cakes.
Last week set a record for Redlands district orange shipments with 220 cars of navels sent out, compared to 180 cars the previous season. Packers rush fruit to market as growers target a swift finish to the season. The fruit remains in excellent condition and commands good prices. Total shipments for the season rise as markets respond with strong demand.
This season shows 2442 cars against 50 at the same date last year. Mutual Distributors announce returns with A. Gregory as manager paying $1.20 for fruit shipped from December 20 to February 15. The frosted fruit handled reduces returns, but overall returns are excellent for the period. Later pools are expected to improve results.
About four hundred bankers gather in Riverside for the California Bankers association annual convention on May 5 to 7. A committee plans city tours, a dress parade, band concert, receptions, and excursions to Rubidoux Mountain and local industry venues.
The Christian Endeavor Society of the Congregational church held a Friday social in the field behind S. I. Andrews home. About forty guests played outdoor games and enjoyed a picnic supper. Favorite college songs and familiar tunes were sung heartily, making the pow wow a success and prompting praise for the organizers.
Directors chosen to lead a countywide Riverside Agricultural Association plan aims to raise funds through shared membership. The group, modeled on orange growers societies, will have 21 directors with 13 from outside Riverside to ensure countywide control. Local officials C D McNeil E J Genereux S B Hampton and Howard Glass named to represent Riverside, with bids from Perris San Jacinto and other communities.
The Interstate Commerce Commission finished taking testimony on lemon freight rates in Chicago after six days of hearings that began in Los Angeles. Growers seek reduction from 1.15 to 1 from the Arlington Heights Fruit Exchange, with Washington arguments slated for May 11. James Peabody and E Strohm testified on fruit handling and car routing.
Business leaders discuss forming a county wide fair association to showcase diversified county products. They believe a first class exhibition could benefit producing districts beyond Riverside, while city businessmen push for organization to spur broader county growth.
