Newly elected city council members took oath at city hall last evening. Three councilmen were seated while the city clerk was not sworn due to bond error awaiting alteration by the surety company. he is expected to assume duties within a week. No business occurred at the swearing-in. the first official meeting will be held this evening to begin routine work.
About 6 30 last evening Martin Grizzle delivering groceries on Washburn Street was thrown when a shaft broke. He clung to the shaft as the horse bolted and was pitched to the ground breaking the bone in his left hand and bruising his limbs. He was near unconscious when found. His escape from more serious harm is noted as remarkable.
There is a delay in gathering census reports in Corona due to fear the enumerator is a book agent and not answering the summons. It is hoped this will not occur again and residents will assist to ensure a true and complete count of noses.
Palm Springs reports Halley's comet plainly visible in daylight. It rose at 3 am, appeared 25 degrees south of the sun, and moved southwest before vanishing behind San Jacinto mountain by 1 30 pm. Brilliance similar to the sun, with no visible tail. Also notes stray quotes from contemporary columns and a witty exchange about opinions.
The eighth annual County Christian Endeavor Union convention runs April 28–29 in Banning with free rail fare for delegates. Program features include song services, sermons by Neil Munro and Paul Brown, and conferences led by Edith Graves and T. Hannay Jr. The event includes officers elections, missionary reports, and a street meeting.
In San Bernardino on April 18 a strange skeleton was found in Santa Ana canyon. Coroner Van Wiet concludes it is an aged woman possibly from an ancient race pre dating current Indigenous inhabitants. Dig explorations may reveal subterranean chambers and relics linking to a forgotten people.
Walter D. Wagner county auditor of San Bernardino and secretary of the state railway commission spent Monday in the city renewing old ties and meeting supporters. He campaigns for the Republican nomination for secretary of state saying he has circulated papers in most counties and enjoys broad backing.
A union mass meeting will be held at the Baptist church Sunday evening April 24 at 7 30 with Rev W E Perry of the Reform Bureau for the Pacific Coast as speaker on Redemption of a Great State. The event promotes social reform and invites all to attend.
The State Board of Health launches a pre season campaign of inspection and education at mountain resorts to prevent typhoid fever. Inspectors will explain sanitation laws review toilets and water supplies and educate proprietors on prevention while avoiding undue disruption. If resorts refuse cooperate the board will enforce the law to curb infection risks.
The Corona Tennis Club will meet the Casa Blanca Tennis Club of Riverside on Saturday April 30 at the Casa Blanca grounds on Adams Street. Four men’s doubles teams and four mixed doubles teams will compete, followed by a dance at the club house with members traveling as guests to Riverside.
An addition 60 by 40 feet will be built on the north and south ends of the Christian church at Main and Ninth streets. Eight classrooms and a gallery will be added. The upgraded facility will seat about six hundred and is valued at 4500 dollars.
