Explosions Wreck Baldwin Munitions Plant Near Philadelphia

At Eddytown near Philadelphia the Baldwin Locomotive Works munitions plant was wrecked by three explosions. One hundred one women and girls were killed and about two hundred more wounded. government investigators are on site. Other items note a New York liner striking a mine and various wartime measures and political moves.

Home Guard Mobilized In Response To Population Rise

City authorities doubled police strength from three to six and armed the fire department. Guards now protect utilities and a 200 men Home Guard unit operates in eight man squads under corporals. Buckshot ammunition has been purchased for rapid response near the Mexican border.

Safety measures at the City Hall

Corona residents packed the city hall for a mass meeting led by City Attorney Geo. R. Freeman to organize a home guard under Police Chief A. C. Ramsey. The plan assigns eight per squad with two cars, drills by squads, riot and firebell procedures, and a call for civilians to stay indoors during alarms.
