Corona residents are urged to attend a patriotic mass meeting at the Woman's Clubhouse tomorrow evening at 7 30 featuring a speaker from the American Red Cross of Los Angeles. All ages are invited to sing songs and hear speeches promoting national defense.
President Woodrow Wilson proclaims an extraordinary session of Congress for April 2 1917 at noon in Washington to receive a national policy communication. The address notes Germany's submarine warfare and pending universal service legislation as pivotal issues shaping U S policy and wartime mobilization.
Washington April 2 Congress met in extra session to hear President Wilson declare that a state of war exists and demand delegated full powers as Commander in Chief to confront German submarine aggression. This caps nearly three years of efforts to protect American lives and property from ruthless submarine warfare.
President Wilson will address Congress at eight o'clock tonight amid a crisis atmosphere as the chamber prepares for a potential war declaration. The Foreign Relations committee has a war resolution drafted, not expected to pass before Wednesday. Pacifists clashed with guards as 15,000 protesters gathered at the Capitol. police moved to clear entrances. Plans anticipate the seizure of about 90 percent of German ships interned in American ports if war is declared.
A R McCarty a well known Auburndale rancher donated 2.50 to Corona young swimmers wading pool fund. Grocer L J Otto joined by pledging 2.50 by phone. The fund continues to grow with daily contributions from residents.
In Corona city hall at 7 30 this evening business leaders push for forming a farm bureau to aid cannery plans and improve planting growing and marketing of crops. Out of town speaker Prof William S Parker to address the meeting.
A state department lecturer and landowner John L. Bishop join a farmer bureau outreach from the agricultural department of the state. The group from Orange and Highgrove invites all interested in farming to attend this evening session.
The ie Rifle Club announces an extra special meeting at city hall Wednesday night at seven thirty. Members are urged to attend.
A 350-voice chorus with 160-piece orchestra will perform a memorial requiem for war dead at New York's Hippodrome tomorrow night. The choir, organized by John Watkins of Scranton, Pa., is conducted by Edgar Varese, with sponsorship from Cardinal Gibbons and Bishop Greer.
Local paper advertises free Shetland ponies for Corona area readers. The Ponies are about 42 inches tall, weigh around 400 pounds, and will be delivered from a pony farm. The first pony is Cody, linked to Buffalo Bill, with more surprises promised in upcoming issues.
