FDA Commissioner Donald Kennedy told a House subcommittee the agency is considering expanding the saccharin ban to forbid medical use amid new evidence linking the artificial sweetener to bladder cancer in human males.
The House Ways and Means committee agreed to end the federal income tax deduction for state and local gasoline taxes as part of completing the tax provisions of President Carter's energy bill.
The Supreme Court struck down the ban on advertising lawyers prices and services. It said advertising could reduce costs for consumers. The restriction originated in 1908 with the American Bar Association and is now enforced in all states.
The Supreme Court upheld most of California's election law in a brief order. It affirmed a federal court ruling that new statewide parties must either register to reach one percent of the last gubernatorial vote or gather petitions equal to ten percent of that vote.
A Ugandan man said he joined a 10 man squad that ambushed Idi Amin on June 18 near Entebbe, claiming Amin was hit by machine gun fire and carried away by guards. A twin engine Piper Navajo crashed while attempting an emergency landing ten miles west of Grand Canyon Airport killing five people including 17 year old Henry Lattum of Norco and his father George Luttum. Elizabeth Luttum survived with burns as four others escaped the burning wreckage. The crash occurred after engine trouble shortly after takeoff from Riverside Municipal Airport.
Four simultaneous Riverside County raids netted a Home Gardens man and four Riverside residents accused of running a 940,000 weekly bookmaking operation. About 25 officers seized betting markers and records showing 13 000 in bets daily and up to 500 000 during football season.
