E L Yeager Company of Riverside has the low bid of 269 938 to widen Sixth Street, starting after the July 4 holiday from the west end toward the city limits. The project converts Sixth into a four lane road 64 feet wide with curbs and gutters, and requires removal of trees and giant peppers along the route.
The Corona Realty Board voted to continue weekly meetings through summer on Mondays at the Springborg Hotel. Charles Thomas presided and urged service to the community and support for the Multiple Listing Service. A resolution to seek reduced fire insurance rates for Corona was adopted, citing improved water facilities and a fire marshal, and requesting a survey of Corona for lower rates.
A head on side swipe near Red Star Station on the Corona Elsinore highway sent Mr and Mrs Charles L Owens of Santa Monica to Corona Hospital with minor injuries. Their car collided with a truck driven by William Ten Ton Bartee of Los Angeles, injuries treated by Brown ambulance. A second incident on Etiwanda Avenue left Adolph Wilson of Corona with minor injuries after his car struck a telephone pole and he was cited for alleged drunk driving.
The Los Angeles city council warned of a mass exodus of liquor dealers to county territory if the half per cent tax rises to five per cent. An ordinance drafts a separate four and one half per cent tax on bottled goods and drinks sold over the bar.
In Los Angeles a 64 year old grandmother Mrs May Forgy married 70 year old Jesse H Taylor on Saturday night. Her daughter Mrs Merle Thomas wed Spencer Ramadell 29 and granddaughter Arlene Kelly married Ralph Lester 17. The trio honeymooned together today.
The Corona City Plunge introduces an audio-visual program to teach water safety for all ages. Adult swimmers preview films in the Little Theater while children watch before instruction. The effort, led by Mrs. H L C Whitcomb with Robert Stauffacher, emphasizes staying alert to pool hazards and proper responses to cramps strong currents and holes.
Miss Georgia Borden sold The Tot Shop at 709 South Main Street to Harriett Webster. The new owner plans to expand the inventory from infants and small children to include teenagers while maintaining the shop’s strong local reputation for children’s clothing. Harriett Webster and husband Art Webster reside at 115 East Olive Street with children Jary, 17, and Eleanor, 12.
In Clarksburg and surrounding counties, the Red Cross distributed food and medicine after a six county flood killed or left missing 32 people. Police said 11 bodies were recovered and 21 were missing. Reports from Washington cited Doddridge county fatalities ranging 23 dead with 10 to 15 missing. Floods swelled Ohio river tributaries to 36 foot waves washing away dozens of homes. Six of a Smithburg family were missing after Middle Island Creek flood. One son survived and believed his parents and siblings drowned. Kennedy Station saw injuries when a gasoline tank was struck by a floating barn and exploded. Over 250 youths at Jacksons Mill 4 H camp were reported safe.
A special census survey of farms in the Corona area is conducted by the Department of Agriculture. Figures will be available tomorrow or Wednesday. Corona population figures from Census Bureau officials in Riverside are complete but not released yet. The last unofficial report suggested Corona may exceed 10 000 residents.
Nobel Prize winner and atomic science authority Dr Harold C Urey will address the Montana Society of Engineers at a dinner in Butte hosted by Montana School of Mines Tuesday night. A Montana State University graduate, he is a chemistry professor at the University of Chicago and will discuss Political Consequences of the Atomic Age.

A Navion rented from Gibbs Flying Service in San Diego has been located on a dry lake bed in a desolate Baja California area 306 miles south of the border city. The aircraft showed a broken propeller and footprints lead to nearby hills. the owner Samuel Anis of Santa Monica faces a grand theft warrant issued June 8 as airports nationwide monitor for the missing plane.
Charles W. Field 74 of 819 Fullerton Street died Sunday night at Riverside Community hospital after a brief recovery from surgery when he suffered a heart attack. He worked 20 years as packing house superintendent for Jameson Company before retiring in 1946. Born in Brooklyn November 28 1875 he moved to California 46 years ago and Corona 29 years ago from Ontario. Survived by his wife Ida J Otto four sons a sister two nephews and six grandchildren. Funeral Wednesday 11 am at Brown Funeral Home with Rev Charles French. interment Sunnyslope Cemetery. Friends may call at Brown Funeral Home.

G Manley Cole of Corona reports his WGDVU radio station has earned the WAC certificate from the International Amateur Radio Union for contacting stations across six continents. He cites Japan South Africa Scotland Canada Australia and Uruguay as proof of global reach amid fears of flare ups in Korea. The union and the ARRL promote international amity through amateur radio, tracing roots to Hiram Percy Maxim.
