Wilma Hoekstra of Mira Loma, 20, was selected the 1977 78 California Dairy Princess at a Thursday coronation by the Milk Advisory Board. She succeeds Susan Dutra of Turlock after defeating district winners from 11 districts.
President Idi Amin has resumed his official duties after a week of rumors he was killed or wounded in an assassination attempt by dissident soldiers. Radio Uganda denounced the reports as malicious propaganda spread by the British and urged an end to interference in Ugandan affairs.
The Senate voted 44 to 38 to bar administration use of funds to implement a blanket pardon for Viet Nam era draft resistors. The restriction, added by the House to a funding bill, defeats Sen. Hatfield's bid to restore authority. The White House criticized the move and a veteran aide warned of potential challenge to the restriction.
In New York the stock market saw broad gains as heavy volume traded with over 15 million shares by midday. The Dow Jones hit 930.10 up 4.73 points amid reports of stronger bank loan demand signaling potential corporate spending.

In Sacramento the Senate rejected SB164 limiting binding arbitration for police and fire labor disputes. The bill would force arbitration after failed talks, ban strikes, and penalize officers who join them. Local governments opposed, while police and firefighters supported the measure.
Riverside County Supervisor Donald Schroeder will hold weekly office hours at Norco City Hall to answer resident questions about county government. The first session is set for Thursday morning June 30, with flexible daytime hours and possible evening hours if needed. Schroeder notes Norco is gaining its first regular supervisor office and cites tax assessment as a major Norco issue.
Norco Senior High School will graduate about 370 seniors at 7 p.m. on the football field. NSH principal James Troxel gives the welcoming address, with valedictorians Annelle Anderson Katherine Hsu Deborah Quick and salutatorian Victor Hagland delivering speeches.
