Riverside Republican Central Committee seeks sponsor sheets for State Senate vacancy

The Riverside County Republican Central Committee invites anyone seeking appointment to the State Senate vacancy created by L. M. Backstrand’s death to obtain a sponsor’s sheet at the Republican Headquarters in Riverside. Sheets are available until July 1, must be returned by 5 pm July 6, with a candidate’s night on July 9 to present and hear speakers. The panel may, if legislation passes, appoint Gordon Cologne to the Senate and fill the Assembly vacancy created. The sponsor sheet is informal and not required by law, but the committee wants to know who backs applicants.

Proposed Corona Freeway plan urged by chamber

Corona Chamber of Commerce highway committee urged the City Council to adopt the term Proposed Corona Freeway in a July 6 meeting letter. Chamber President Ira D. Calvert asked the council to publicize Corona, noting its central location between Pomona and Temecula along the freeway corridor.

Space Spinner lab to study living in space station like conditions

Four men will live and work for 30 days in a rotating Space Spinner research device at Downey California. North American Aviation builds the $310000 facility for its Space and Information Systems Division to test human adaptation to orbital station life. Previous USC tests used a 23 foot radius centrifuge to gauge psychological and physiological responses. The Space Spinner will be about 150 feet across and extendable to 250 feet.

Burglars Take Furnace From New Gardena Home

B A Watt Construction reports an $85 furnace stolen from a new house at 1105 Aquamsvrine Lane in Gardena while under construction. Police also investigated a break in at 601 East Fourth with cuff links and tie clasps taken and a plaster money bank emptied, money left in two purses. Entry was through a window.

Dairymen Honored At Corona Chamber Dinner

A crowd of 160 dairymen, Corona merchants, wives and guests heard Ron Brill describe the dairy industry as a leading local employer, noting Riverside County contributions near 16 million dollars. Lorene Broersma, 1964 dairy Princess, was introduced, and Dr. Jack Saunders was cited for outstanding service to the local dairy sector.

Fire damages civil rights hall in Moss Point Mississippi

A Knights of Pythias hall used for NAACP meetings was damaged by fire early today in Moss Point. Two white Mississippi Project students were arrested on vagrancy charges after attending meetings, and firefighters confined the blaze to a small section of the two story building.

Search on for rights workers in Mississippi disappearances

A house-to-house search began in rural east Mississippi for three missing civil rights workers after their burned car was found near a snake-infested swamp. Two white New York youths Andy Goodman 20 and Mickey Schwerner 24 and James Cheney 22, a Black man from Meridian, are missing as authorities including Allen Dulles and Governor Paul B. Johnson coordinate with the White House and FBI in the effort to locate them.

County planners urge four acre minimum for poultry ranches

Riverside county planning officials backed a four acre minimum for chicken ranches, down from the current nine acres, in a unanimous vote. The plan would drop health and license references, but a supporter urged retaining health standards to curb flies and odor. The commission also proposed a 250 foot minimum lot width and 200 foot screening between houses and nearby residences.
